The nature of the work will include, but is not limited to the following:

  • Valid practical nurse license by Ohio Board of Nursing Education & Nurse Registration.
  • Must also have one of the following to verify appropriate preparation to administer medication: Practical Nurse Educators (OOPNES), or Ohio Board of Nursing.
  • Serves as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Performs skilled practical nursing procedures & treatment to clients assigned to unit: applies sterile dressing; collects specimens as directed by physician; assists physicians with physical exams & treatments; assists in emergencies (e.g., first-aid, restraining patients, code assists); administers controlled (e.g., narcotics, minor tranquilizers) & non-controlled (e.g., aspirin) medication in oral, rectal, or injection form; provides medication instruction to patients; facilitates & supports Mental Health Recovery for individuals with severe & persistent mental illness.
  • Maintains all medication for clients assigned to unit: utilize Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services approved office productivity software, approved intra & internet resources & information systems in an appropriate work-related manner as specified in the NBH Personal Computer Usage Guidelines for Employees.
  • Updates & maintains medication accountability records; charts medication given to clients in patient medical charts.
  • Prepares & counts medication; maintains medication stock, equipment & supplies for unit.
  • Provides general nursing & direct care to client & newly admitted clients assigned to unit takes patient vital signs daily or as directed.
  • Assists client with personal hygiene, bathing, or daily living activities; administers topical ointments & solutions, eye, ear &/or nose drops; assists with or escorts patients to treatments, appointments &/or hospital recreational activities; provides one to one group activities according to the individualized treatment plan.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

License to practice nursing as a licensed practical nurse issued by Ohio Board of Nursing pursuant to Section 4723 Ohio

Revised Code & proof of completion of an approved course in medication administration. License & appropriate driving record. 

 

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT:

Biennial renewal of licensure as practical nurse. Obtain & maintain certification in CPR.

    The nature of the work will include, but is not limited to the following:

  • Assesses & evaluates nursing & medical needs of patients who are hospitalized (e.g., admissions, ongoing treatment, discharges).
  • Initiates & directs implementation of nursing care plan.
  • Observes, evaluates & records patient behavior, condition & response to medication, treatments & therapeutic activities.
  • Provides professional nursing care (e. g., administers medications & treatments as ordered by physician, educates patient on medication(s), assists with physical examinations, takes & records vital signs, performs venipuncture); responds to emergency situations (e.g., codes, suicide, assault).

    The nature of the work will include, but is not limited to the following:

  • Trains patients to function independently in self-help & daily living skills (e.g., personal hygiene, feeding, grooming, etiquette, social skills) by using variety of training techniques (e.g., behavior modification, token economy systems, hand-over-hand instruction, limit setting) according to prescribed individual treatment plan (i.e., ITP).
  • Institutes appropriate crisis intervention (e.g., verbal, physical), for unacceptable behavior as defined by ITP.
  • Implements appropriate therapeutic precautions (e.g., suicide, assault, escape).
  • Organizes/conducts activities &/or groups (e.g., educational, games, crafts, walks) & ensures patient participation.
